Was Jesus the Son of God? In the writings of John in the Bible, we read how he was determined to prove to us that Jesus is the Son of God. John has reported to us sayings of Jesus to demonstrate His power and authority, and throughout the book presents a series of “I am” statements which confounded Jesus’ listeners, angered His critics and drove His followers to their knees.

The first statement is in the book of John

Jesus declared; I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

Jesus is speaking here of “spiritual bread,” not literal bread. As bread is associated with life, health and nourishment, Jesus says that whoever comes to Him will never hunger – whoever trusts in Jesus will have their needs met.

Second statement about Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ declared; I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8;12)

Jesus is declaring that he is the Light of the world.  Jesus proclaims to be the exclusive source of spiritual light, there is no other source of spiritual truth available to us. Become a follower of Jesus, darkness will leave and your eyes will be open to the truth.

 Third statement about Jesus Christ

Jesus declared; I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:7)

Jesus is “the door,” not “a door.”  Jesus is the only door by which we may enter and be saved.  There is no other way.

Fourth statement about Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ declared; I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me.” (John 10:11)

Jesus describes himself as “the” good shepherd, not simply “a” good shepherd. As a shepherd looks after his sheep, Jesus is the one who protects, guides, and nurtures those who choose to follow him.

Fifth statement about Jesus Christ

Jesus declared; I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.” ( John 11:25)

Jesus claims to be both the resurrection and the life.  There is no resurrection or eternal life apart from Jesus.  Jesus gives spiritual life and power to those who believe in him, so that they share his triumph over death and therefore are assured of eternal life.

Sixth statement about Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ declared; I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Jesus is the only way to Father God. There is no other way to enter Heaven. Many are looking for truth today, but Jesus stated that he is the only truth. He is “the truth” not “a truth”.

Seventh statement about Jesus Christ

Jesus declared; I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. (John 15:1)

Jesus wants us to know that He is connected to His followers just as the branches of a vine are connected to its stem. Jesus is assuring us that as the roots and trunk of a grape vine nourishes and sustains its branches He will care for us and nourish and sustain us.

So is Jesus the Son of God? John affirms this by saying, Truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20: 30-31)
