In this session Wilma Watson will share how to break free from bad relationships. In other words, how to remove unhealthy soul ties.

We saw in the previous sessions that the first piece of unhelpful baggage we carry is shame. The second piece of baggage was unforgiveness.

The aim in this session is to help you remove the third piece of baggage – bad relationships that have caused unhealthy soul ties. Watch this:

Do you know what a soul tie is?

Two people who have had an emotional or spiritual attachment can be healthy or unhealthy form a soul tie.

Soul tie is a modern term. The Bible uses words for soul ties, like: Bond in Numbers 30:10, knit together in Colossians 2:2, unite in 1 Corinthians 6:16, one flesh in Mark 10:8 & 1 Corinthians 6:16, yoked together in Numbers 25:3 & 2 Corinthians 6:14 and joined in Mark 10:7.

Good relationship – healthy soul tie

The Bible speaks of a healthy soul tie in Ephesians 5:31 (ASV).

As the Scriptures say, “A man is to leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh.

The Biblical word that describes the bonding of two people sexually is called, “cleave”. The Greek word for “cleave” means to glue, adhere to, or cement your soul to, another person’s soul.

When bricks are loose, they are easily knocked down but when they are firmly cemented together, they become a very strong structure.

Bad relationships – unhealthy soul ties

Let’s look at a negative energy operating in an unhealthy soul tie. In first Corinthians 6:16 we read:

Don’t you know that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, she becomes a part of him and he becomes a part of her? For God tells us in the Scripture that in his sight the two become one person.

Whenever two people engage in sexual intercourse they are, in effect, creating a “one flesh” reality.

Sex is not merely a physical act for personal gratification. Sex is a holistic experience that engages our mind, body, soul and spirit. It is the ultimate expression of intimacy between a man and a woman, making the two one flesh. That’s why sex between two people forms a lasting bond between them whether they know it or not, whether they want it or not.

Sex is never just sex!

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body (1 Corinthians 6:18 NIV).

Have you ever wondered why sexual sins are specified by Paul as being the only sins against the body? Why not, for example, drugs or alcohol?

Intimacy and close bonding between a man and woman is meant to be an illustration of the intimacy that God desires with Christ and His church.

Ephesians 5:32 goes deeper to explain on becoming one flesh:

This mystery is very great, but I speak concerning [the relation of] Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:32 Amp).

God wants us to live a holy life. Listen to what the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:14 and 7:1. (GWT).

Stop forming inappropriate relationships… dear friends, we need to cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates the body and spirit and live a holy life in the fear of God.

Can bad relationships / unhealthy soul ties only be formed through sex outside marriage?

Unhealthy soul ties can also be formed when either a man or a woman is a controlling person. You can become the victim or even the one doing the controlling.

Tracy became extremely unhappy working for her manager. He became increasingly abusive and controlling until she decided to leave and start her own Real Estate business. She struggled until, realizing that her former boss still had a negative influence over her, she cut off the controlling spirit that existed between them. We met Tracy a few months later and she shared excitedly how her business flourished after praying and breaking the soul tie.

Praise God the Bible tells us how to be set free. It says in Isaiah 58:6b (NLT): Let the oppressed go free and remove the chains that bind people.

So, let’s break and remove those chains of unhealthy soul ties and set you free. Ask the Holy Spirit to prompt you regarding the people or things He wants you to break from.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, please forgive me for forming ungodly and unhealthy relationships.

Forgive me for having sex outside marriage, I acknowledge it as sin. I cut myself free and renounce the covenant of the “one flesh” unions and break the mental images that have kept me connected to them.

I give you all my guilt and shame and in exchange receive your forgiveness and acceptance.

Where I have been a victim of control, I choose to forgive and release. I step out from under the control and influence. I release those who I have controlled.

I draw back to myself every part which has been wrongfully tied in bondage to him/her in my mind, emotions and will. I ask you to cleanse me and restore my soul.

In Jesus’ Name, I break and sever all unhealthy soul ties and the assignment of all evil spirits attempting to keep me in bondage. I command all unclean and controlling spirits to leave now.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Praise God for the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin and sets us free.

In the next session we’ll learn what it means when it says, “Jesus was bruised for our iniquities” and how to apply the work of the cross and be set free.
