Self-defense walls will keep you from getting close to other and also keeps God at a distance. In this session Wilma Watson will share a possible reason why we fail to really experience the love of God.

Wilma has been teaching us how to break free from our emotional baggage. She trusts that you are finding these sessions helpful! Watch this:

We saw in the previous sessions how to remove the baggage of inner shame, unforgiveness, unhealthy soul ties and iniquities.

Maybe you’ve a built wall around yourself to protect yourself from being hurt

The wall you have built to protect yourself from being hurt again may stop others from harming you, but the wall also keeps God at a distance.

Have you built a self-defense wall around yourself to stop yourself from getting hurt again? Are you also blocking out God’s voice? We can help you break down this barrier.

Let’s first hear from Ann Voskamp as she shares about trust: ‘Perhaps the opposite of faith is not doubt. Perhaps the opposite of faith is fear. To lack faith perhaps isn’t as much an intellectual disbelief in the existence of God, as it is fear and distrust that there is a good God’.

God wants you to believe in His goodness and wants to fill you with His perfect love so that every particle of fear will be expelled.

Here are practical steps you can take when faced with a situation that may cause you to fear:

1. Remind yourself that God is faithful to His Word, and you are not alone.

Isaiah 41:13 assures us that, I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you.

Talk to yourself when you are afraid, I have the Creator of the Universe holding my hand, therefore I don’t have to be afraid.

2. We are told in the Bible to stop being worried or anxious

Matthew 6:25 (Amp) says, STOP being worried or anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) about your life.

Tell yourself! “God is greater than this situation, therefore I refuse to be worried or afraid.”

Wilma shares from her experience when she was in Ethiopia. She talked to herself when she was afraid.

‘There were no roads where we lived in Ethiopia, only walking trails. I was riding a mule home alone on one of these trails. It got very dark, and I found myself lost, with hyenas howling nearby. I confess I was afraid and tired after several hours on a mule! I cried out to God and the mule stopped still. It refused to go any further!

I’m not sure if it was the hyenas or an angel that stopped the mule. I didn’t see an angel, but I felt the presence of God. So, I let go of the reins and the mule turned around itself and took me immediately to the right path and led me home safely’.

3. In prayer, let go by handing your concerns and worries over to God

1 Peter chapter 5 verse 7 encourages us to: Cast (or give) all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all our concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].

Note the Bible verse we just read says to hand all your concerns and worries over to God – once and for all.

4. We are to let God change the situation

Carrying our problems, fears and worries around is like holding your problems in a basket up on your head all day. No wonder, by the end of the day, you are a basket case! And that you are so exhausted and have sore shoulders and back from carrying your burdens.

We are to give all our concerns over to God and not take them back. Leave them with Him! He can do a better job caring for the situation than you could.

Here is a wonderful promise for you from Mark 11:23-24: Whoever (the ‘whoever’ is you) says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours (ESV).

Are you ready to join me in prayer, to remove your self-defense walls?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, please forgive me for allowing my fear, anxiety and worry to become greater than You.

I acknowledge that I have built my own self-defense walls through fear to protect myself from being hurt again. Please forgive me. I’m willing to let the wall go and put my trust completely in You.

It is written in Your Word Father, “For this purpose the Son of man was manifest that he might undo the works of the devil.” Therefore, I undo the works of the devil and pull down the self-defense walls that I have built.

It is also written that God is a consuming fire, therefore I declare that these walls, no matter what they are made of, be destroyed and consumed by fire.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for Your presence that covers and protects me. In You, I’m totally safe and secure.

I give you all my concerns and worries and close the door to fear in my life. I command in Jesus’ name for all fear to leave.

Put a guard over my heart, Father. Help me to trust you and not lean on my own understanding. In Jesus Name I ask it. Amen

That’s the conclusion of this session. In the next session we’ll share how to have a closer walk with God.
