Is the cry of your heart, How do I find God?, or God help me! Mankind has formed many different religious systems in an attempt to find peace with God. Religions have a code of practice, rules and regulations in an attempt to find a supreme being that would meet their deepest need.
So what do I have to do to find God?
Devote myself to religious formalities or try to become a better person so that God will accept me?
The world’s many religions are all evidence of man’s endless search to find God and fill a vacuum or spiritual emptiness within. Augustine put it this way, “You have made us for yourself, O God, and our hearts are restless until we find our rest in you.” A searching heart will find God:
Job in the Bible asked this question: “Can you find out God by searching?” (Job 11:7) The Bible goes onto tell us that we can find God when we sincerely search for him. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will search for me. And when you search for me will all your heart, you will find me.”
God wants to be found “God is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to be lost, but he wants all people to change their hearts and lives.” (2 Peter 3:9) This includes you!
Let’s look at two misconceptions that could prevent you from finding God:
The first misconception is, “To find God I have to become religious?”
God isn’t into religion or external performance in our attempts to reach up and find him. God is into reaching down to mankind in order that he may find us and have a relationship with us.
Religion wants to fix us from the outside in. God wants to fix us from the inside out by allowing us to experience His divine love and forgiveness.
Religion is about following a set of rules in order for us to get God’s acceptance. God is about accepting us when we receive, as a gift, His grace.
There is only one true God: The Bible says, “The Lord created the heavens. He is the God who formed the earth and made it. He did not want it to be empty, but he wanted life on the earth. This is what the Lord says: “I am the Lord. There is no other God.” (Isaiah 45:18)

The second misconception is, “God is out to get me or to punish me for my sins.”
With our spiritual emptiness we are like a burnt out or “dead” electric light bulb that cannot respond to its power source. We try through various religious practices and methods to reach the power source, but until we plug into the source, for all practical purposes there is no power. Faith is much like electricity. It is always there, waiting to be used. God is waiting for us to plug in, by faith, to His power today! The Bible says, “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) God loves you so much that he sent Jesus to take the punishment of your sins upon himself.
Personalize God’s promise to you by adding your name: ““God loved __(name) __so much that he gave his one and only Son so that when __ (name)___ believes in him __(name) __may not be lost, but have eternal life.”
The Bible teaches us that the salvation that mankind seeks is only found through faith in Jesus Christ. We read in the Bible that Jesus, the Son of God, declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.” (John 14:6)
