Who is a Christian? What is Christianity About?

A Christian is a person who adheres to Christianity.

We read in the Bible in Acts 11:26 that in Antioch the followers of Jesus Christ were first called “Christians” – they followed Jesus’ example by being like Christ in behavior, activity, and speech. That is what the word “Christian” literally means, a “follower of Christ.”

Unfortunately over time, the word “Christian” has lost a great deal of its significance. “Christian” is often referred to someone who is religious or who has high moral values.

Many people who do not believe and trust in Jesus Christ consider themselves Christians simply because they go to church or they live in a “Christian” nation. But going to church, or being a good person does not make you a Christian! Attending MacDonald’s and paying for a hamburger does not make you a hamburger, does it? Likewise, attending services regularly, and giving to the work of the church does not make you a Christian.

The Bible teaches us in Titus 3:5 that, “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done…” and Ephesians 2:8 tells us that it is “…by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

Christianity is God reaching down to mankind.

Christianity teaches that Jesus, the Son of God, died for our sins, was buried, resurrected, and thereby offers salvation to all who will receive him by faith. In the Bible we read, “We aren’t saved from sin’s grasp by knowing the commandments of God, because we can’t and don’t keep them, but God put into effect a different plan to save us. He sent his own Son in a human body like ours – except that ours are sinful – and destroyed sins control over us by giving himself as a sacrifice for our sins.”

Christianity is a way of life based upon one’s love of God and love of people.

Instead of adhering to a list of “do’s and don’ts,” the Christian seeks a close relationship with God. Discover what Christianity is about and who makes a true Christian.
